In Solingen, North Rhine-Westphalia, a piece of Italian automotive history has found a home: a 1966 Fiat 1500 Familiare, affectionately known as "Giani." Since April 2005, he has belonged to Miriam and Thomas Gatawetzki-Köppchen, who brought him from Sicily to Germany, driven by a deep passion and the desire to preserve this extraordinary vehicle and get it back on the road.

The golden age of Italian automobile manufacturing

The Fiat 1500 Familiare was produced in the 1960s at the Mirafiori plant in Turin one of the company's most storied facilities. It is based on the sedan version of the Fiat 1500, which was introduced in 1961 alongside the technically near-identical Fiat 1300. The elegant, understated design came from Mario Boano, one of the most renowned Italian automotive designers of his era. As a "Familiare" (estate wagon), the car was designed above all for everyday practicality and generous space. At just over four meters in length and with a curb weight of approximately 1,350 kilograms, it offered room for the whole family along with their luggage. Under the hood sat a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 75 horsepower, which was remarkably spirited by the standards of the day. Top speed was around 140 km/h, an impressive figure for a station wagon of that era. Particularly noteworthy are the engine's silky refinement, the direct handling, and the high-quality appointmentsby Fiat's standards, including two disc brakes, a rarity among mid-size cars of the time.

A storied life, from Florence to Sicily

Before "Giani" made his way to Germany, he lived a true Italian life. First based in Florence, he belonged to a doctor who later took him to his vacation home in Sicily. There, the Fiat was retired from everyday use and reserved only for special occasions . He was simply too good for daily driving, too charming, too well-kept, too special. "Giani" soon became a beloved classic car on the island and from 1982 onward participated regularly in events such as the well-known "Raduno Auto d'Epoca Amadeo Sillitti" on the western coast of Sicily.

A fresh start in Germany for the little Fiat

After the death of his Italian owner in 2005, the Fiat eventually passed to a classic car dealer who specialized in Italian collectibles. A mutual acquaintance brought the vehicle to the attention of Miriam and Thomas Gatawetzki-Köppchen, and the spark was immediate. "Giani" moved to Solingen and became part of the family. Since then, he has been cared for with great dedication and driven regularly. The car remains largely in its original condition. Only the engine has been overhauled. Thanks to careful treatment over the years, it shows no signs of rust, a rare circumstance for vehicles of this series. The interior has also been lovingly preserved, including many original details such as the characteristic Fiat steering wheel, the simple yet stylish dashboard, and the generously sized bench seats.

"Giani" today, a classic car with heart

Giani is no museum piece; he is a true companion for life. During the season from March through October, he is regularly out on the road, whether at classic car meets, touring drives, rallies, weddings, or simply family outings. His appearances never fail to attract attention, nostalgia, and enthusiasm, not least because of his charming name and the visible love with which he is maintained. The Fiat 1500 Familiare is a rare classic that impresses both technically and stylistically. As "Giani," he has found a new home in Solingen where he is not only cared for, but truly lived with. His story is a wonderful example of how classic cars not only preserve the past, but also create new memories.
