Albatros Residence in Briatico: A Slice of Tranquility on the Costa degli Dei

Five nights at the Albatros Residence on the Calabrian Costa degli Dei were enough to know one thing: we will come back, and stay longer next time. There are places that captivate you instantly without making a fuss about it. The Albatros Residence in Briatico is one of them.

We had chosen the resort as a base for a few days in Calabria, without great expectations, more as a quiet starting point for excursions to Capo Vaticano and Tropea. What we had not expected: how much the place itself would become the anchor of our stay.

Calabria at its most beautiful

Anyone travelling to the Costa degli Dei for the first time quickly understands why this stretch of coast is known as the "Coast of the Gods". Between Briatico, Tropea and Capo Vaticano , small bays, rocky stretches of coast and bright beaches with crystal-clear water alternate. Depending on the time of day, the sea shimmers in the most varied shades of blue and turquoise, and in places it is more reminiscent of the Caribbean than of the Italian mainland.

We have already reported in detail on Briatico and Capo Vaticano elsewhere. But it is only after spending several days there that you realise just how special this region truly is. For us, the Costa degli Dei is without doubt one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Italy.

A small holiday resort right by the sea

The Albatros Residence is located a little outside Briatico in Punta Safò. Anyone expecting a large hotel complex with entertainment, pool landscapes and evening shows is in the wrong place. The resort is manageable in size and, from our impression, comprises around 25 to 30 apartments. That is precisely what makes it appealing. Instead of mass tourism, guests are greeted by a quiet and family-friendly atmosphere.

Even on arrival, we noticed the special location . The apartments are set slightly elevated above the sea, and from our terrace we had a direct view of the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. Waking up in the morning with a view of the water and letting the day fade out in the evening to the sound of the sea are among the things that made this stay so special.

The apartments win you over with their functionality

The apartments are not luxuriously furnished, but they offer everything you need for a relaxed holiday. Air conditioning, a kitchen, plenty of space and pleasant cleanliness ensured that we quickly felt at home. We were particularly pleased to note that everything worked and seemed well maintained.

The Wi-Fi was also absolutely fine for a holiday resort. Since we worked on Vivere in Italien during our stay, we were able to test this directly. For normal internet use, research and editorial work, the connection was completely sufficient.

The real highlight: the private beach

The greatest strength of the Albatros Residence, however, is not the apartment but the location. A short path leads from the apartments down to the private beach, taking no more than two minutes. There, each apartment has a permanently assigned parasol with loungers and seating. No one has to reserve loungers in the morning or search for a free spot.

We were particularly impressed by the sea. During our stay the water was crystal-clear, and even from the shore you could see right down to the bottom. The colours alternated between turquoise, light blue and deep azure. The beach itself consists of a mix of sand and pebbles, which makes it feel natural and well kept at the same time. The resort also has kayaks and pedal boats that guests can use free of charge. This is a pleasant extra service, especially for families.

Peace and quiet instead of entertainment

What we personally liked especially was the peace and quiet. There is no entertainment programme, no loud events and no constant background music. Instead, during the day you hear the sea and in the evening the conversations of guests on their terraces. During our stay, most guests were Italian families, alongside the occasional holidaymaker from Scandinavia and Ukraine. German guests were rather the exception.

In the evening, a lovely piece of Italian way of lifecame to the fore. While many Germans would long since be in bed, Italian families often still sit together on the terrace at around 10 p.m., having dinner and enjoying the cooler temperatures. Nevertheless, the atmosphere remained relaxed and pleasantly quiet at all times.

A car is practically a must

Anyone booking the Albatros Residence should, however, be mobile . The resort is clearly geared towards self-catering, and shopping is difficult to manage without a car. A vehicle is also very helpful for excursions along the Costa degli Dei.

For our shopping we drove to the Conad branch in the centre of Briatico, about five minutes' drive from the residence. Conad is one of the largest supermarket chains in Italy and offers the usual selection of fresh produce, bread, wine and everyday products. Within walking distance of the Albatros Residence is also the Goccia di Mare, which we already recommended in our Briatico article. For larger shopping trips or further dining options, however, it is worth driving to Briatico or the surrounding towns anyway.

Between self-promotion and reality

We found it interesting that the Albatros Residence advertises its own restaurant on its website. During our stay, however, this effectively did not exist. What there is instead is a small bar that also serves as the reception. There you can get drinks and small snacks, sit outside in the open air and let a relaxed evening fade out.

So anyone expecting a classic hotel restaurant with a menu and evening service will not find one here. Anyone who, on the other hand, appreciates an Aperol Spritz or a cool drink with a view of the sea is in good hands at the Albatros bar. We tested the breakfast twice during our stay and were pleasantly surprised. Fresh cornetti, cappuccino and a good start to the day, although the breakfast has to be ordered the evening before each time. This is by no means meant negatively; rather, it underlines the character of the resort. Here the focus is not on catering but on the location right by the sea.

Why we will come back

Over the past few years we have visited numerous regions of Italy, and Calabria impressed us particularly. The Costa degli Dei offers a coastal landscape that is second to none. Briatico, Tropea and Capo Vaticano are among the places that you do not merely visit but that stay in your memory.

For us, the Albatros Residence was the perfect basefrom which to get to know this part of Calabria. Not because of any special luxury, not because of an extensive entertainment programme and also not because of an exclusive hotel service. What made this stay so special was the combination of the resort's tranquillity, the view of the sea from the terrace, the privately assigned stretch of beach and, above all, the coastline, which is among the most beautiful we have experienced in Italy so far. After five nights it was therefore already clear to us: we will come back next year and then stay a few days longer.
