A major expansion of transportation infrastructure in southern Italy has been completed: a new highway interchange on the Autostrada A30 Caserta–Salerno has opened near the city of Maddaloni. The new infrastructure is designed to significantly ease traffic around one of Europe's largest logistics platforms and to strengthen the regional economy.

Direct access for a key logistics hub

The new interchange is located at kilometer 4+100 of the highway and provides, for the first time, a direct connection to the logistics center Interporto Sud Europa. The project was carried out by Autostrade per l'Italia with the support of the logistics center and the city of Maddaloni. The new infrastructure is part of a comprehensive expansion of regional transportation connections. The goal is to link the logistics platform efficiently to the highway network while simultaneously relieving the local road infrastructure of congestion. In particular, State Road 265 is expected to see a significant reduction in heavy traffic going forward.

Around 30,000 vehicles per day expected

Once fully operational, the operators anticipate an average traffic volume of approximately 30,000 vehicles per day. The new traffic routing allows heavy and light vehicles to be better separated, improving overall traffic flow.

According to the operators, this is expected to save approximately one million hours of travel time annually. For individual road users, this can translate to an average time saving of up to ten minutes, whether heading into the city or to the logistics center.

Major construction achievement and complex engineering

Construction work totaled approximately 140,000 labor hours and was completed without any workplace accidents, according to the operators. Among the most technically demanding elements was a new overpass structure consisting of three large steel segments. The central element weighs approximately 170 tons, while the two lateral segments each weigh around 50 tons. The new toll station was also generously scaled. It features five exit lanes and three entry lanes, with a total width of more than 38 meters. Over the course of construction, approximately 175,000 cubic meters of material were moved, around 37,000 square meters of asphalt were laid, and nearly 49,000 meters of copper and fiber-optic cable were installed. In addition, approximately 5,000 meters of new safety barriers were erected.

Environmental measures implemented before construction began

Extensive environmental measures were prepared even before construction started. These focused in particular on the protection of fauna and vegetation, noise reduction, and air and water quality As part of the ecological integration of the new infrastructure, new rows of trees and native plant species were planted in adjacent areas to enhance the natural surroundings. The official opening was attended by several high-ranking representatives from politics and business, including Italy's Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini, representatives of the Campania region, and local authorities. Arrigo Giana, CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, emphasized the economic significance of the new infrastructure at the inauguration. He noted that it not only improves connections to industrial areas and key markets, but also has the potential to attract new investments and create additional jobs in the region. In his assessment the project is therefore far more than just a road construction initiative, representing instead a meaningful stimulus for the economic development of the entire area.
