When the subject of the most dangerous volcano in Europe comes up in Germany, most people immediately think of Vesuvius. The slumbering giant above the Gulf of Naples, responsible for burying Pompeii in 79 AD, is the international symbol of volcanism par excellence. From a scientific perspective, however, the picture looks rather different. Italy is home to several active volcanoes, each with its own character and risk profile, and the most famous is not automatically the most dangerous. A closer look at the five most significant active volcanoes in the country reveals why the question of Europe's true hotspot must be answered differently from what the images of Pompeii might suggest.
Vesuvius above the Gulf of Naples
At Vesuvius stands 1,281 metres tall and is the only active volcano on the European mainland, towering over the Bay of Naples as a widely visible landmark of the region. Its most famous eruption, on 24 October 79 AD , buried Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae under layers of ash and killed thousands. The volcano remained active for centuries afterwards, with its last major eruption occurring in 1944, in the midst of the Second World War, when several settlements at the foot of the mountain were destroyed. Since then, Vesuvius has been largely seismically quiet, as the Osservatorio Vesuviano notes in its current status report, with a green alert level and no signs of heightened activity. At the foot of the mountain stands the Osservatorio Vesuviano, the world's oldest volcanological observatory, founded in 1841, which monitors Vesuvius around the clock.
The real challenge posed by Vesuvius lies in its population density. Around 700,000 people live in the red zone surrounding the volcano, with over three million in the greater Naples conurbation. An eruption on the scale of the 79 AD event would have catastrophic consequences in the modern era, which is why Vesuvius, despite its current calm, remains one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the world. The summit is accessible via a well-maintained footpath from the road below and remains one of the classic sights of Campania.
Etna on Sicily
At Etna, on the eastern coast of Sicily , at around 3,357 metres, is both the highest active volcano in Europe and the most active in terms of eruption frequency. The mountain produces several eruptions per year, mostly effusive lava flows that move slowly down its flanks and rarely pose an immediate threat to people. Recent years have seen particularly intense activity, with spectacular lava fountains lighting up the night sky and ash clouds that have repeatedly brought air traffic at Catania to a temporary standstill. Between late 2025 and early 2026 alone, the mountain demonstrated, as documented by the Osservatorio Etneo in its update, a multi-week eruption phase with Strombolian activity at the Voragine crater and lava flows in the Valle del Bove. Etna has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 and forms part of one of Italy's most significant nature parks.

Etna's danger zone covers primarily the sparsely populated higher elevations of the mountain itself, whilst the city of Catania, with its roughly 300,000 inhabitants, lies 27 kilometres away. The region's civil protection structures have spent decades learning to live with the regular eruptions, and the predictability of lava flows as assessed by the Osservatorio Etneo is internationally exemplary. The mountain is accessible by cable car and off-road vehicle up to its higher elevations and is one of the most visited active volcanoes in Europe.
Stromboli on the Aeolian Islands
At Stromboli, situated north of Sicily on the island of the same name, represents a special case in European volcanology. Rising 926 metres above sea level, with considerably more beneath the water, the mountain has been producing almost continuous small explosive eruptions for over 2,000 years, with ejections of glowing rock and gas clouds every ten to twenty minutes. This continuous activity has given its name to an entire category: the Strombolian eruption is a technical term in international volcanology. Famous too is the Sciara del Fuoco, the "Fire Slide", a steep flank on the north-western side of the island down which ejected material slides into the sea.
Around 500 people live on the island in the two settlements of Stromboli and Ginostra, making their living from volcano tourism, fishing and agriculture. The continuous small eruptions are a part of daily life for the residents, whilst stronger paroxysmal eruptions, such as those in 2019 and 2022, continue to attract widespread attention. During the eruption on 3 July 2019, a German tourist lost his life whilst hiking on the island. As the Italian Protezione Civile notes in its official volcano profile, paroxysmal eruptions and lava flows can additionally destabilise the Sciara del Fuoco and, in rare cases, trigger small tsunamis along the surrounding coastlines. Climbing to the summit is now permitted only with qualified mountain and volcano guides and is strictly regulated, whilst observation of the eruptions from the sea or from certain viewpoints remains unrestricted.

Vulcano, the name-giver
A few kilometres south of Lipari lies the island of Vulcano, whose name became the root of the word for "volcano" across all European languages. The mountain itself, the Gran Cratere della Fossa, reaches a height of 500 metres and last erupted between 1888 and 1890. Since then, the crater has been quiet, but intense fumarolic activity keeps the ground warm and produces the characteristic sulphurous smell that pervades the island throughout the year. Two bathing areas with natural sulphur mud and steaming sea zones make Vulcano one of the most extraordinary wellness destinations in the Mediterranean.
Since October 2021 , however, the situation on Vulcano has changed. The Osservatorio Vesuviano raised the alert level to yellow after fumarole temperatures and CO2 levels rose significantly. Parts of the island were temporarily evacuated, particularly the lower-lying zones around the crater, where CO2 can accumulate in dangerous concentrations. As the Centro Monitoraggio Eolie documents in detail regarding the island's hydrothermal crisis, fumarole temperatures at the crater rim climbed to peak values of up to 390 degrees Celsius between 2021 and 2023, combined with increased seismicity and inflation of the cone. The roughly 700 residents have since adapted their daily lives accordingly, and tourist use of the island has been restricted in certain zones. Vulcano is currently regarded as the second volcano in Italy, alongside the Campi Flegrei, whose condition is being monitored with particular attention by the INGV.
The Campi Flegrei near Naples
To the west of Naples, in the conurbation between the city and Cumae, lies the largest active volcano in Italy by surface area: the Phlegraean Fields or Campi Flegrei. Unlike Vesuvius, Etna or Vulcano, the Campi Flegrei have no single summit; instead, they form an extensive caldera with 24 craters, many of which lie beneath the sea. The last eruption visible at the surface took place in 1538 and created Monte Nuovo near Pozzuoliwithin a matter of days. The last super-eruption occurred around 40,000 years ago and is considered one of the most powerful eruptions in Europe's recent geological history.
Since 2005, the system has been in a phase of bradyseism, a slow uplift and subsidence of the ground, accompanied by growing seismic activity. On 31 July 2026 at 19:46, the Osservatorio Vesuviano recorded an earthquake of magnitude 4.7 with its epicentre between Pozzuoli and Quarto, the strongest in over four decades. In the following 48 hours, a further 217 earthquakes were recorded before the swarm was declared over on 2 August. Eight buildings were declared uninhabitable, and 130 families comprising around 290 people were evacuated. As as documented by ANSA from the INGV report, eleven earthquakes of magnitude 4 or above have occurred in the Campi Flegrei since 2023, while Vesuvius remained largely seismically quiet during the same period. As the INGV notes in its official update, the current warning level remains yellow, because other parameters such as ground uplift rate and magma depth remain stable.

Why the most famous volcano is not the most dangerous
The four volcanoes introduced so far, Vesuvius, Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano, each have clearly defined risk profiles. The Vesuv is dormant, but surrounded by a densely populated red zone. Etna is highly active, but with predominantly effusive eruptions and sparsely populated hazard zones. Stromboli produces continuous minor eruptions, yet the island has only 500 residents. Vulcano has shown signs of heightened activity since 2021, but again affects only a small population. In all four cases, civil protection structures are well established and eruption styles are comparatively predictable.
The Campi Flegrei differ in one critical combination. They erupt extremely rarely, but in the event of a super-eruption, with a magnitude that has no equal in the European context. Combined with the approximately 500,000 people in the immediate hazard zone and the dense infrastructure of the greater Naples conurbation, this gives rise to the volcanological classification as "Europe's most dangerous volcano", which is based less on current activity than on the potential scale of damage in the event of an eruption. As the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences shows in a recent study of the complex earthquake dynamics, the Phlegraean Fields system has been responding increasingly non-linearly since 2005, with an acceleration in seismic activity that goes beyond the rate of ground uplift alone.
For volcanology, it is therefore clear that Italy's most famous volcano is not its most dangerous. Vesuvius remains the symbol, while the Campi Flegrei represent the real Hotspot. Both are monitored by the same Osservatorio Vesuviano, applying the same scientific standards and the same international networks. For travellers, this presents no immediate danger, but rather a clear recommendation to visit the region just as one always has, keeping an eye on the latest announcements from the Protezione Civile and bearing in mind that the geological realities of southern Italy have been part of daily life for its inhabitants for thousands of years.
