Italy's tourism sector is entering 2026 on a positive note. Early indicators from the latest analysis by the tourism observatory of the Italian chambers of commerce suggest that demand for travel to Italy is developing steadily, with further growth expected in several areas. The findings are based on a study by Unioncamere, ISNART, and ENIT.

Strong capacity already booked for spring

According to current surveys, roughly half of the available rooms at Italian accommodations have already been booked for the period from January through April 2026. At the same time, approximately 100 million tourist overnight stays are projected for the first four months of the year. Within the industry, these figures are regarded as an important early indicator of full-year performance. Growth continues to be driven strongly by international visitors. According to Italian surveys, the most important source markets include Germany, France, and Switzerland. For many regions of Italy in particular, international demand thus remains a decisive stabilizing factor.

Major events provide additional momentum

Large-scale international events are seen as an additional growth driver. The study points to, among other things, the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, which are expected to raise the profile of the regions involved and generate additional demand for local businesses. These effects, too, are factored into the positive outlook for the 2026 tourism year. This optimistic assessment does not come out of nowhere. For 2025, the study cites an estimated economic impact of 108.8 billion euros across the broader tourism value chain. This was accompanied by nearly 891 million overnight stays, counting both official accommodations and the parallel market.

Italy holds its strong position

All of this suggests that Italy is well positioned to maintain its role as one of Europe's most important travel destinations in 2026 as well. Current early indicators point to persistently high demand, a strong international presence , and favorable conditions for another successful year in tourism.
