Italy is entering Carnivalwith strong momentum. According to the latest data from the Italian Ministry of Tourism accommodation occupancy during Carnival week stands at around 41 percent. This puts Italy ahead of several major European competitors, including Spain, Greece, and France, and represents further growth compared to the previous year. The data is based on analyses of large online booking platforms and serves as an early indicator of actual travel activity. Short-notice city trips and event-focused travel around major festivities are especially well reflected in these figures.

Carnival as an economic driver across Italy

Carnival has long since grown beyond a purely cultural event into a significant economic engine. The Ministry of Tourism estimates the overall economic impact of Carnival events nationwide at well over one billion euros. This figure includes accommodation, dining, transportation, admission tickets, and related tourist services. Particularly noteworthy is the broad regional distribution. Unlike individual large-scale events, visitor interest is not concentrated in a single city but spread across numerous locations with their own distinct Carnival traditions.

Major Carnival hubs draw international visitors

Among the most important visitor magnets is the Carnival in Venezia, celebrated for its historic masks, costumes, and events throughout the lagoon city. Also in high demand is the Carnival of Viareggio in Toscana, renowned for its monumental themed floats. In Ivrea in Piemonte, the traditional Battle of the Oranges draws international attention every year. Other significant Carnival destinations include Acireale in Sicilia, known for its elaborately designed floats and light installations, and Putignano in Puglia, whose Carnival is among the oldest in Europe. Many of these events span several weeks, creating additional travel opportunities.

Ministry sees advantage in seasonal distribution

In the assessment of Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè, the Carnival season clearly illustrates the structural strength of Italian tourism: events held across many regions at different points in the calendar help distribute visitor flows more broadly. This has a stabilizing effect and reduces seasonal peak pressures. From the Ministry's perspective, this once again confirms the international competitiveness of Italy's tourism offering, underpinned by cultural diversity, regional traditions , and a high density of events.
