The fourth heatwave of the summer of 2026 is hitting Italy differently from the classic heatwaves of the past. In Bologna the thermometer reached 40 degrees on 4 August; in Milan, Florence, Rome, Padua and Foggia the readings stood at 39 degrees. What is new is not the height of those figures, but the fact that even along the coasts and on the islands there is scarcely any prospect of relief from the classic sea breeze The Mediterranean is in many places as warm as the land, and in some areas even warmer than climatological averages should allow. This removes the physical mechanism that has until now reliably eased the heat along Italy's coastlines during heatwaves.
What the Copernicus data show
The latest satellite data from the European Copernicus Marine Service show surface temperatures of between 27 and 30 degrees across the entire Mediterranean for the first week of August 2026, with local peaks above 30 degrees in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Sicily. In the Gulf of Genoa, the Ligurian Sea and the zone between Corsica and Sardinia, temperature anomalies of up to 5 degrees above the climatological average were recorded. As the Italian National Research Council (CNR) notes in a recent study, the Mediterranean has displayed extraordinary thermal characteristics since 2022, with the record year being 2024, and the first analyses for 2025 indicate a continuation of this trend at a high level.
Why the sea breeze fails
The classic sea breeze arises because the land heats up more strongly during the day than the sea. The warm air rising over the land draws cooler air in from the sea, producing a noticeable cooling effect along the coasts and a fresh onshore wind. The prerequisite is a significant temperature difference between sea and land. When the sea itself is at 28 to 30 degrees and the air above the coast sits at 32 to 35 degrees, that difference is too small to set the circulation in motion. The sea breeze either fails entirely or is reduced to a barely perceptible movement of air that no longer cools the coastal atmosphere.
Even on the islands, where the sea breeze has traditionally ensured pleasant summer nights, minimum temperatures have remained above 25 degrees according to the latest observations from the Servizio Meteorologico. They therefore meet the definition of tropical nights, in which temperatures do not fall sufficiently for the body to recover.
What this means for the coasts
The persistently high water temperatures have consequences that are not only climatic but also ecological. As Civonline summarises in an analysis of ESA and CNR data, the continuous warming is leading to a tropicalisation of the Mediterranean, with a shift in marine flora and fauna towards subtropical species. For swimmers, the effect is manifesting in a different form: the current bloom of Ostreopsis ovata algae, which has led to swimming bans in several Italian coastal zones, is a direct consequence of the high water temperatures.
A second effect concerns the weather itself. A sea with a surface temperature of 28 to 30 degrees acts like a gigantic energy store, which releases enormous potential for the formation of severe thunderstorms and self-regenerating storm systems at the first atmospheric disturbance. In the Alps and pre-Alpine foothills, the first signs of this unstable situation were already apparent on Sunday, 3 August, with intense thunderstorms over Piedmont and Lombardy, while the heatwave continued unabated across the rest of Italy.
What travellers should bear in mind now
For travellers heading to Italian coastal destinations this week, little changes in practical terms regarding the recommended precautions against the heat. The classic Italian strategies of avoiding the peak hours between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., staying hydrated and wearing appropriate clothing apply no less forcefully at the coast than in inland cities. What is new is the recognition that even the night-time hours by the sea no longer provide sufficient recovery, which is why the choice of accommodation, and in particular the availability of air conditioning, has become more important in the summer of 2026 than in previous years. The persistently high sea temperatures form part of the broader context of the current heatwave, which at present has 25 of Italy's 27 major cities on bollino rosso.
