Italy is not just pasta, wine, and relaxed evenings on the terrace. It is also a country where sport is part of the culture and physical activity is not "just for the summer body“, sondern für das Wohlbefinden betrieben wird. Hier geht es nicht darum, sich im Fitnessstudio bis zur Erschöpfung zu quälen – Sport ist harmonisch in den Alltag integriert: ein morgendlicher Lauf, Soccer with friends in the courtyard, a bike ride through the scenic hills of Tuscany, or yoga by the sea.

Mindful self-care or simply a way of life?

One might assume that Italians, with their rich culinary tradition, are not particularly athletic. Far from it! In fact, they are quite active, not through strict training regimens but through natural movement in everyday life. They walk more than many other Europeans, frequently ride bikes, and have a genuine love for team sports and dancing.

Collapsing on the couch after work? Not in Italy! Many people prefer heading to the tennis court, the swimming pool, or going for a jog along the promenade. And walks, those are sacred! The evening passeggiata (a leisurely stroll) is a centuries-old tradition, and it counts as exercise too, just in an especially elegant form.

Sports: Not Just Soccer for Young People

Ask an Italian teenager about their favorite sport, and the answer will most likely be: "Calcio!" (Soccer!)Italy lives for this sport. Children play it in every backyard, and many young people dream of a career at Juventus or AC Milan.

But soccer is not the only option. Young Italians are showing increasing interest in basketball, tennis, volleyball, and even skateboarding. In major cities, fitness studioscrossfit, and martial arts are trending. And more and more young people are running marathons, not to break records, but to challenge themselves and enjoy the journey.

Beauty Through Movement and Sport

Italian women place great value on their appearance, but their approach to sports is relaxed. They choose activities that bring them joy: yoga, Pilates, dancing, swimming. And of course, walks, hiking in the mountains, or cycling trips with friends.

Here, exercise is not about pushing through pain but about feeling good in one's own body. This is why Italian women often look fantastic without extreme diets or hours of training, they simply move with enjoyment!

More Than Just Soccer

Italian men are not only passionate about soccer. Many are avid tennis players, runners, or regular gym-goers. Swimming and triathlon are also very popular.

And then there is the bicycle! Italy is a paradise for cyclists, and every weekend one can spot groups of men in professional cycling jerseys, climbing the serpentine roads of the Alps or the Dolomites.

Active Well Into Old Age

Anyone who thinks Italian seniors simply stay home watching television is mistaken. Elderly people can be seen everywhere doing Nordic walking, Water aerobics doing cycling, or even jogging!

For the older generation, sports are not just a way to stay fit but also an opportunity to socialize. They meet in parks for group exercise, go dancing, or head out on shared bike rides. No wonder Italians live so long and stay active well into old age.

Why is the Italian approach to sports so brilliant?

The Italian secret is simple: they do not force themselves to exercise, they simply live in motion. For them, physical activity is a natural part of their lifestyle, not a punishment for an extra serving of pasta. They do not spend hours at the gym, yet they always find a way to stay active.

And that just might be the secret behind their longevity and love of life. So, for those who want to live like an Italiano the prescription is simple: walk more, ride a bike, play tennis, dance. And above all, enjoy every moment of it!
