The Trevi Fountain, one of Roma's most magnificent and celebrated landmarks, has captivated visitors from around the world for centuries. With its elaborately crafted sculptures and imposing Baroque architecture, the fountain stands as a prime example of Italian artistry. Construction was completed in 1762, and since then it has been a symbol of the Eternal City. The tradition of tossing a coin over one's shoulder into the fountain to ensure a return to Roma has long since become legendary. Every year, millions of coins land in the water, with the proceeds going to charitable causes.

The fountain is currently without water

Yet even a masterpiece like the Trevi Fountain is not immune to the ravages of time. The fountain is currently without water, as "extraordinary restoration work" is underway. In the coming year, access to this Roman landmark is set to be limited further. City officials in the Italian capital are also considering introducing an admission fee. The photos accompanying this article were therefore taken last summer.

Fortunately, the Trevi Fountain will not be completely hidden from view during the restoration work. Visitors can admire it up close, as a temporary walkway leads directly to the impressive sculptures and offers perspectives that are normally out of reach. While the traditional coin toss is not possible at the moment, a provisional basin has been set up so that the custom can continue even during the works. Many tourists are taking advantage of this unique opportunity to view the masterpiece at close range, and are delighted to experience the artists' intricate craftsmanship from such an unusual vantage point.

Many tourists and pilgrims expected during Holy Year 2025

The restoration is set to be completed by the end of the year, just in time for the start of Holy Year 2025, when Roma is expecting an especially large number of pilgrims and tourists. The Trevi Fountain will then shine once again in its full splendor, inviting visitors from around the world to toss coins, harbor dreams, and soak in the atmosphere of one of Italy's most beautiful spots. This extensive work ensures that this masterpiece of Baroque art will remain an indispensable part of the Eternal City for many years to come.
