Too Expensive? Lake Garda Feels the Decline in German Visitors

Anyone strolling through the alleyways of Bardolino or Lazise in summer knows the familiar scene: cafés packed with guests, a buzz of voices in many languages, above all German. But this year is different. Empty tables in restaurants are no longer a rarity, and some shops close earlier in the evening than usual. The reason is a development that has alarmed many hoteliers and retailers: fewer and fewer German and Italian vacationers are making their way to Lake Garda.

Lake Garda: A Rapid Rise in Prices

Fabio Pasqualini, president of the trade association Confcommercio Bardolino, summed up the mood for the regional newspaper Corriere del Veneto: "The summer is nowhere near as rosy as one might like to believe." In addition to the general strain on purchasing power , noticeably higher restaurant and bar prices are weighing on visitors across the region. For families, a simple evening out can quickly add up to amounts that would have seemed unthinkable just a few years ago. Another factor plays a role that has nothing to do with local prices yet is just as decisive for vacationers: the journey itself. Several reports point to extensive construction work and traffic bottlenecks at the Brenner Pass, the most important route connecting Bavaria to northern Italy. Travel times have increased noticeably, giving travelers yet another reason to postpone a trip to the lake.

New Guests, Different Habits

That said, Lake Garda is not empty, only the audience has changed. According to regional media, visitors from northern Europe are filling the gaps. These guests, however, have a different travel style: they prefer to stay at campgrounds, cook for themselves, spend their evenings at the campsite, and spend less at bars, boutiques, and souvenir shops. As the saying goes around here: "What's missing are Italians and Germans." This is most apparent after sunset. Where promenades and alleyways used to be alive until midnight, many spots feel noticeably quieter today. Hotels are reporting vacant rooms, while campgrounds are well occupied in many areas, a structural shift that is having a tangible impact on retail revenues.

Retail Is Feeling the Pressure Too

For the local economy, this is a delicate situation. Retailers and restaurateurs report declining revenues in the double-digit percentage range and are adjusting opening hours or offerings, for example by introducing campground-friendly options tailored to the new clientele. Still, the concern remains that loyal returning guests could be lost for good if price levels and travel stress are not addressed.

Lake Garda: Picture-Postcard Charm Is No Longer Enough

Lake Garda remains a dream destination, turquoise water, picturesque villages, and that unmistakable Italian way of life included. But this summer shows that even a classic cannot take its appeal for granted. High prices, long journeys, and shifting visitor behavior have left a gap. Winning back German and Italian guests will take more than beautiful views: transparent, family-friendly pricing, better accessibility , and offerings that once again make a spontaneous trip to the lake feel irresistible.
