Tourism in Italy continued to develop robustly in 2025. Based on the quarterly data published so far by the national statistics office ISTAT, quarterly data from the national statistics office ISTAT both the number of overnight stays and key demand indicators have exceeded prior-year levels over the course of the year to date. An official ISTAT full-year figure for 2025 is not yet available; however, the monthly and quarterly values on hand paint a consistent picture of sustained growth.

Overnight stays growing faster than arrivals

Particularly in the second and third quarters of 2025, overnight stays at accommodation facilities increased noticeably. While the number of arrivals fluctuated slightly in individual months, overnight stays grew more dynamically overall. This trend suggests that the length of guests' stays has stabilized or, in some cases, extended. A key growth driver over the course of 2025 so far is international tourism. According to ISTAT data, more than half of all overnight stays were attributable to guests from abroadduring the summer months. In the third quarter in particular, overnight stays by international travelers were significantly above the prior-year level, while domestic demand remained largely stable. This pattern confirms Italy's strong international standing as a travel destination.

Tourism: a seasonal trajectory with monthly variation

The ISTAT monthly data also show that 2025 has not developed evenly. After a strong spring, a temporary slowdownoccurred in May before demand picked up again noticeably in June and especially during the peak summer months. Such fluctuations are considered normal in the tourism sector and are influenced by calendar and weather effects as well as the timing of public holidays. At the regional level, a broad pattern of growth is evident. Coastal regions, art cities, alpine areas, and rural destinations developed at different rates but collectively contributed to the positive overall result . Heavily tourism-oriented regions in the north, including alpine destinations such as South Tyrol (Südtirol), moved in line with national trends and showed comparable seasonal patterns.

Rising tourism value creation

Alongside growing overnight stay figures , spending by international guests also continued to increase over the course of the year to date. The balance-of-payments data from the Banca d'Italia show gains in tourism-related revenues for the summer months of 2025. This confirms the economic significance of international tourism as an important pillar of Italy's service economy. Even without full-year ISTAT figures yet available, it is clear that tourism in Italy is on a stable growth trajectory so far in 2025. The combination of international demand, regional diversity, and a strong summer season underscores Italy's role as one of Europe's leading tourism destinations. The final assessment of the full year remains subject to the complete ISTAT data.
