In spring, the Lana region in South Tyrol transforms into a breathtaking sea of blossoms. Among gentle hills and expansive orchards nature reveals itself in its most colorful splendor. Alongside the well-known apple blossom, a remarkable natural phenomenon draws additional attention: after frosty nights, the targeted protective measures taken by fruit growers produce glittering ice flowers that turn the blossoms into a sparkling crystal landscape.
A Sea of Blossoms in South Tyrol's Largest Apple-Growing Region
With roughly 1,200 hectares of apple orchards, Lana is considered the largest apple-growing region in South Tyrol. In spring, thousands of trees burst into bloom simultaneously. The varieties Golden Delicious, Gala, Fuji, and Red Delicious in particular shape the landscape with their characteristic pink-and-white blossoms. This brief window of full bloom draws numerous visitors every year who want to experience the natural spectacle up close. While closed buds can still withstand temperatures down to around minus four degrees Celsius, open blossoms are extremely sensitive to frost. Without protective measures, the later harvest would be seriously at risk.

Frost-Protection Irrigation and the Phenomenon of Ice Flowers
To protect the blossoms, many fruit growers rely on a technique known as frost-protection irrigation. During the night and early morning hours, a fine mist of water is sprayed over the orchards. The water freezes on the blossoms and forms a protective layer of ice. The heat of crystallization released in this process keeps the temperature inside stable at around zero degrees Celsius, which is sufficient to shield the delicate blossoms from frost damage. At the same time, a fascinating side effect emerges: the ice-coated blossoms and branches shimmer in the first light of day as though encased in glass. These ice flowers lend the orchards an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. In some areas, fire barrels or frost candles placed between the rows of trees provide additional warmth.
"Lana Blüht": A Spring Experience Combining Nature and Flavor
In April, the entire region is defined by the apple blossom. The event series "Lana Blüht" celebrates the flowering of the orchards each year in a very special way. Visitors can stroll through the plantations, join guided tours, and learn more about cultivation, varietal diversity, and the cultural landscape. Regional producers also present typical products and specialties centered on the apple. In this way, Lana brings together the beauty of spring nature with regional tradition and culinary pleasure, creating a well-rounded experience for anyone looking to discover South Tyrol during the month of blossoms.
