Drivers in Italy can benefit from the June 6, 2026 current reduced fuel excise taxesonly through that date. After that, filling up could become more expensive again. For vacationers traveling to Italy in the coming days or already on the ground, it is worth taking a close look at fuel prices.

Reduction of the excise tax on fuels

The so-called "Taglio delle accise", the reduction of the mineral oil tax on fuels, was adopted in response to the sharp rise in energy prices seen in recent months. The goal was to at least partially ease the burden on consumers, businesses, and the transportation sector. The government in Rome had already extended the measure several times and reconfirmed it again at the end of May. Under current law, however, the discount expires on June 6.

Drivers are currently benefiting from a reduction of around five cents per liter of gasoline. For diesel, the tax reduction currently stands at approximately ten cents per liter. While the discount on gasoline remained unchanged, the relief on diesel has already been reduced compared to earlier regulations. Italian media report that the government is increasingly scrutinizing the cost of the measure and is therefore looking for alternative support models.

The effects are clearly visible at the pump

The effects are clearly visible at the pump Italian trade media report that fuel prices have fallen for several consecutive days. In early June, the average diesel price in numerous regions dropped below the two-euro-per-liter mark for the first time in a while. Declines were particularly noticeable in central and northern Italy. At the same time, price differences between individual regions remain considerable. While some regions report comparatively low prices, drivers in Südtirol for example, continue to pay significantly more.

For vacationers traveling to Italy in their own vehicle, the current situation can make a noticeable difference. With a vehicle that has a tank capacity of 50 liters, the tax discount adds up to several euros on a full tank. Those who need to fill up multiple times during a longer vacation, or who are traveling by motorhome, will feel the relief even more.

Could fuel vouchers be the alternative?

Whether the tax reduction will be extended beyond June 6 remains to be seen. Italian media report, however, that discussions within government circles are focusing on targeted support for lower-income households instead. Among the options being considered are fuel vouchers or similar models tied to specific income thresholds. Such a solution would primarily benefit Italian citizens rather than the millions of foreign vacationers who travel to the country by car each year.
