The goal is to identify technical deficiencies early, with a clear focus on a frequently underestimated component: tires.
Focus: Tire condition and compliance
Especially during the summer months, when millions of people are traveling on Italy's roads, tires become a central safety factor. Heat, long distances, and the added strain of fully loaded vehicles significantly raise the demands placed on tires. Since the end of April, nationwide checks have been intensified, on highways as well as on rural roads. These are not superficial visual inspections but systematic technical examinations.
Officers measure tread depth, assess the overall condition of the tires, and verify that the tires installed match the vehicle registration documents. Checks also cover whether the tires are appropriate for the current season and whether they are correctly and evenly mounted on both the front and rear axles. Specialized measuring instruments are used to precisely determine wear and safety-relevant defects. Irregularities frequently result in fines or, in serious cases, the vehicle being taken off the road.
Important for drivers: Switching from winter to summer tires
A key point that is often underestimated in this context concerns seasonal tires. Italy has a clear regulation: between October 15 and April 15, depending on the region and road signage, winter tires are required or snow chains must be carried.
After this period, a transitional deadline applies until May 15. After that, the following becomes relevant: Vehicles may no longer be driven on winter tiresif their speed rating falls below the value recorded in the vehicle registration documents. In practical terms, this means that many standard winter tires are no longer permitted in summer, even if they are still technically sound. Drivers who continue to use them risk significant penalties. The fines can amount to several hundred euros depending on the violation and circumstances. In serious cases, penalty points or restrictions on continuing the journey may also apply.
Why tires are in the spotlight
