Anyone traveling to the Adriatic coast this spring should be aware of a new rule: as of April 1, 2026, the Italian city of Pesaro has introduced a sweeping smoking ban on its beaches. The measure has attracted nationwide attention and could be a preview of developments to come in other resort towns.

Smoking on the beach almost entirely prohibited

The regulation is clearly worded: smoking is generally prohibited throughout the entire beach area. This applies not only to conventional cigarettes, but also to e-cigarettes. The ban covers both public beach sections and managed areas, under beach umbrellas, on access paths to the beach, and even in the immediate vicinity of the waterline.

Those who fail to comply face fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros, as reported, among others, by the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica. Smoking is not completely ruled out, however. The city has provided for designated smoking areas , typically near beach bars. Outside these zones, a strict ban applies.

Focus on environmental and health protection

The city's decision is based primarily on environmental considerations. Cigarette butts are among the most common forms of litter on Italian beaches. Their filters are made of plastic and break down very slowly, releasing microplastics and harmful substances into the environment. This is reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.

At the same time, public health protection plays a role as well. Families with children in particular are to be better shielded from secondhand smoke. The city is pursuing a clear goal with this measure: a cleaner and more enjoyable beach experience for all visitors.

No national law, but a clear trend

One important point of context: this is not a nationwide smoking ban in Italy. Such regulations are decided at the municipal level. Pesaro, however, is taking a particularly decisive approach, significantly expanding a regulation already in place since 2019.

Other Italian seaside resorts have adopted similar approaches, though often less strictly. Places such as Bibione and parts of Sardinia have already introduced smoke-free beach zones in recent years. Pesaro now stands as one of the most far-reaching examples to date.

What travelers should keep in mind

For visitors, this means above all one thing: anyone heading to an Italian beach should check local rules in advance. While smoking remains permitted in many areas, individual municipalities can enact significantly stricter regulations.

Pesaro offers a glimpse of the direction coastal tourism may be heading. Cleanliness, sustainability , and consideration for others are growing in importance and could lead to stricter rules in additional resort regions in the future.
