Perched high above the Tyrrhenian Sea on the western coast of Calabria, directly opposite the charming coastal town of Tropea, lies Villa Paola. Nestled in Mediterranean gardens and commanding sweeping views of the sea, this boutique hotel blends historic substance with contemporary architecture. The result is a refined retreat for travelers seeking privacy, tranquility, and a romantic atmosphere.

A Gentle Modernization Rooted in Respect for History

Since fall 2025, the villa has undergone a comprehensive renovation. The redesign was entrusted to the internationally acclaimed Milan-based architecture firm Palomba Serafini Associati, which specializes in the careful evolution of historic buildings. The goal was to preserve the identity of the property while setting new standards in comfort, sustainability, and aesthetics.

In the course of the project, all 14 rooms as well as the interior and exterior spaces were redesigned. Natural materials, clean lines, and a harmonious color palette define the new look. Historic elements such as the 18th-century cloister and the former monastic areas were preserved and reimagined with a fresh sense of atmosphere. The concept is complemented by newly created outdoor spaces that blend seamlessly into the terraced garden landscape descending toward the sea, offering additional places of calm.

From Monastery to Exclusive Boutique Hotel

The history of Villa Paola dates back to the 16th century. Between 1543 and 1552, the building was originally constructed as a monastery for the Order of Minims, founded by San Francesco da Paola. Over the centuries, the property evolved from a religious site to a noble residence and later to a private retreat, before ultimately being established as a boutique hotel.

As far back as the 1960s, the villa attracted prominent guests such as Luchino Visconti and Claudia Cardinale , becoming a place of elegance and discreet luxury. That distinctive atmosphere defines the property to this day, connecting history with the spirit of the dolce vita.

Fine Dining Between Tradition and Innovation

Culinary-wise, Villa Paola draws on its roots as well. The fine dining restaurant "De' Minimi," listed in the Michelin Guide, reopens on April 3 with a new concept. Head chef Emanuele Pucci reinterprets the dietary philosophy of San Francesco da Paola in a modern way, weaving it together with creative, contemporary cuisine.

The focus is on tasting menus of four to nine courses that, under titles such as "Poverty and Nobility," "Virtue Made Out of Necessity," or "The Novena," take diners on a culinary journey through Calabria. Regional produce, traditional techniques including fermentation and preserving, and the interplay of vegetables, legumes, fresh fish, and house-made pasta define the kitchen's character. The dishes are accompanied by a curated selection of wines from the region.

Part of an Exclusive Hotel Group in Calabria

Villa Paola is part of the Mediterranean Hospitality Group, which also includes the family-friendly beach resort Baia del Sole and the Capovaticano Resort Thalasso Spa. All properties benefit from their extraordinary locations and offer different ways to experience the Calabria region. Guests have the option of combining stays to discover the many facets of the region.

Tropea as the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea"

Tropea is considered one of the most beautiful places in southern Italy. The town sits atop a cliff above the sea and offers spectacular views, picturesque beaches, and a charming old town. Its landmark is the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola, which crowns an offshore rock.

Tropea is also known for its red onion, a regional specialty prized well beyond Italy's borders. In 2021, the town was named the most beautiful village in Italy in the "Borgo dei Borghi" competition, a title that underscores the singular appeal of this coastal gem.
