The BenVivere Ranking 2024, published by Federcasse in collaboration with researchers from Next and the newspaper Avvenire, evaluates quality of life across Italian provinces based on various criteria, including the economy, social inclusion, safety, and demographics. This year brought notable shifts at the top of the ranking. The provinceof Pordenone claimed first place, followed by Siena in second and Milan in third. The remaining top spots went to Trieste, Florence, Trento, Rimini, Udine, and Parma.
Bolzano in South Tyrol drops significantly
A striking change involves the province of Bolzano in South Tyrol, which had frequently held the top position in previous years but fell to tenth place this year. The reasons for this decline lie primarily in the areas of legality, safety , as well as demographics and family, where Bolzano performed worse than in prior years. Despite the continued dominance of northern and central Italy, positive developments were also seen in the southern regions of the country. One example is the province of Benevento, which made a remarkable jump of 24 places up the ranking, reflecting a significant improvement in its quality of life . That said, many provinces in the south continue to rank near the bottom of the list. Crotone and Reggio Calabria, in particular, were unable to improve their standings and continue to face major challenges in the areas of economic development and social infrastructure.
Family friendliness, safety, health, and the environment
The BenVivere Ranking is distinguished by its holistic approach, which takes into account not only economic strength but also factors such as family friendliness, safety, health, and environmental conditions. In doing so, it offers valuable insights into the living conditions across the various regions, highlighting both their strengths and their weaknesses. The ranking results are relevant not only to policymakers but also show residents where improvement is needed and which provinces are leading the way in terms of quality of life.
