Bologna is known as the city of towers and tortellini, yet sometimes the road leads not to the historic center but to the outskirts of the city. On the drive from Solingen to Pozzuoli, we made a stopover in Emilia-Romagna. Two nights were spent at the Hotel Fiera Wellness & Spa, a property that has more to offer than one might initially expect from a classic trade-fair hotel.

Location: practical for travelers passing through

The hotel is located at Via Stalingrado 82, just a few hundred meters from the exhibition halls. Guests arriving by car will find parking directly at the hotel. The historic center of Bologna is about three kilometers away, reachable by car or taxi in ten minutes, by bus in around 20 minutes, and on foot in a good half hour. For a stopover, the location is ideal: easy to reach from the highway yet close enough to explore the city on a whim. The hotel offers around 99 rooms, accommodating up to 150 guests in total. The double room was practical yet comfortably furnished, with a comfortable bed, a small refrigerator, a desk, and a modern bathroom. Despite the location on a main road , it was surprisingly quiet, allowing for a good night's sleep after the long drive. Higher-category rooms even feature hydromassage showers or balconies, a nice extra for a property in this price range.

Breakfast: solid, but not a highlight

Each morning, a breakfast buffet was available, more than sufficient for our needs: croissants, pastries, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, and coffee in various styles. Everything was fresh and well-presented, though without any particular surprises. Those looking for a lavish gourmet breakfast will not find it here. For travelers passing through, however, it made for a good start to the day. Surprising for a hotel in this category is the wellness offering: a sauna, hammam, and whirlpool are all available, perfect for unwinding after hours on the highway . Even with only a brief visit, it was a welcome bonus.

Culinary pleasures at "Il Mercante"

The hotel is home to the restaurant "Il Mercante", which many guests praise for its regional cuisine. Dining there was not part of this stay, so only impressions gathered from reviews can be shared here. For those who would like to experience Bologna's culinary traditions without leaving the hotel, this is a convenient option. Head chef Massimo Poggi serves traditional regional dishes, including pasta classics such as Tagliatelle al Ragù.

In summary: Hotel Fiera Wellness & Spa is a property that cannot quite hide its origins as a trade-fair hotel, but it is also an excellent choice for travelers passing through. The location is convenient, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is solid, though not exceptional; the restaurant, on the other hand, comes recommended and has a genuinely good reputation. For anyone looking to experience Bologna on the way south, or simply to recharge for a few hours, this is a very well-suited base.
